An Architectural Inside look to Interior Design

When Kelsey MacDougall of N60 Design hired me, I didn’t realize the epic photo shoot that she had in mind. Kelsey is an Interior Designer, with her degree in Architectural Design. She has multiple projects on the go and is running a successful business in Victoria B.C.
Kelsey was in need of some updated head shots and lifestyle portraits that could be used for her online portfolio. She didn’t want the traditional “corporate” style head shots which I can respect. Instead, Kelsey had a different idea in mind.

Kelsey told me to meet her at a large, character home located in Fairfield. To my surprise, I showed up to a shell of a house. It was totally empty and completely under construction. There was wood and nails everywhere, with her various tools and floor plan papers laying around on the dusty floors. My initial thought was, “this is where you want your photos taken?”

Kelsey gave me the grand tour, and showed me the plans she had for designing this house once the renovations were finished. After looking around the large home, I could totally envision this house coming to life.

She was dressed in a stylish pair of overalls and cute boots. She wanted to capture her authentic self, in a way that showed what normally goes on behind the scenes for an interior designer. Kelsey showed me that there’s much more nitty gritty work to the job, yet she made it look so beautiful.

These are the photos that I was able to capture in this large, cold, dusty and empty house. Natural light was pouring through the big windows and sawdust filled the air. It was a super cool photo shoot and I think I was able to really capture exactly the portraits that Kelsey wanted. I’m not normally one to take “dark and moody” style photos, but these definitely tell a story with their emotion and mood.
I love it when a client has an open mind and wants photos taken that are out side the box. It allows us photographers to try something new and photograph people in a light they may have never been able to show off on their own. Thank you Kelsey for trusting me with this job, it was definitely a fun challenge! You can check out her work by visiting N-60.com
